Copa is a solid right-hand reefbreak and the home break of the Bull Bay surfing community, sitting across from the Jamnesia guest-house. It breaks over a rock ledge and sand, with the flat reef setting up the takeoff while a sandbar builds on the east side. When the reef and sandbar line up, Copa turns into one of the best waves on the south coast, and rides can run long, with 50 to 100-yard waves not uncommon on good days.
When It Works
This is a right that draws swell from east through south (E-S), with southeast (SE) the standout direction. It handles a wide range of size, working from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft, which covers everything from head-high days up to double-overhead-plus. Copa is moderately consistent and comes into form through spring, autumn, and winter.
Wind and Tide
Look for north (N) offshore wind to clean it up. The break works through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
Copa is a shortboard-friendly wave that suits intermediate surfers. The lineup tends to stay quiet and can feel a little reserved. Keep an eye on the reef underneath.
Access
You can park right there, with free roadside parking close to the break. Camping and a surf school are on hand at the Jamnesia setup.
