Costa Banderas surf guide

Costa Banderas is a surf spot located along the Bahia de Banderas, which is Mexico's largest bay. This area features about 9.5 kilometers (6 miles) of coastline that showcases a variety of surf breaks ideal for different skill levels. The region is known for its scenic views and relaxed vibe, making it a nice place to enjoy a day of surfing, whether you're a local or just visiting.

The surf here is mostly suited for intermediate surfers, as it handles swell sizes starting at 2 feet (0.6 meters) and can go up to larger sizes. The best waves break over some uneven reefs, mostly producing right-hand point breaks. The optimal swell direction is from the southwest, but it can also handle northwest swells. Because the winds generally blow from the north, this enhances the surfing conditions, and you can catch good waves at low, mid, or high tide.

While many of the spots require boat access, Destiladeras is accessible by land, making it a convenient option. Other notable spots like La Lancha, Punta Burro, and the Pools also offer solid waves when conditions align. Keep an eye on Puerto Vallarta, as it can occasionally get decent action, especially on bigger days at places like El Tizate and the Holiday Inn area.
