Overview
Cowries is a grinding righthander that breaks over a shallow rock ledge, and it comes to life in moderate swells with some east in them. The take-off zone is tiny and congested, so the wave rewards surfers who can pick their moment and commit.
There are options nearby if it is not doing its thing. On the next headland south, Pools serves up rights and Shatters offers lefts, both equally challenging. To the north on Barrack Headland, Mini Pipe delivers intense, hollow lefts in northeast to east swells.
When It Works
The reef takes swell from northeast through southeast, with east swell the best match. It is usable from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft, so there is plenty of room between the smallest rideable days and the biggest. Consistency is moderate, meaning the good windows are worth watching for rather than counting on.
Wind and Tide
Look for southwest offshore wind to groom it. The ledge can work through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This one is for experts. The take-off zone is small and the lineup gets very busy when the swell lines up, with locals out in force on the good days.

Parking is straightforward, with a car park offering free parking, paid parking, and roadside spots as well.
