Coxos Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Coxos is a powerful right-hand reef and pointbreak that peels along a series of rocky shelves and outcrops into a small bay on the Portuguese coast. Swells muscle in from deep water and unload onto the shallow lava reef, forming fast-moving, symmetrical walls that concentrate their power into the base of the wave rather than the lip, much like many Hawaiian waves. When it hits the slabs just right the ride is long, fast and hollow, and on its day it ranks among the best waves in the country.

When It Works

Coxos draws swell from southwest through north (SW-N), with northwest (NW) swell the best match. It works from 1.2 m / 4 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft and can handle serious size when the swell is clean and from the northwest. Autumn and winter are the seasons to watch, and expect some real paddling on the bigger, better days.

Wind and Tide

Look for east (E) offshore wind, though the inside section can handle a light onshore. Low to mid tide suits the wave best, with a rising tide generally the better call — from just past low pushing towards mid is the window to aim for.

Local Tips

This is a wave for expert surfers only. There is no easy entry at Coxos: you have to paddle hard, get to your feet quickly and start driving, or you risk getting sucked over onto the reef. Getting in and out of the water is tricky, being caught inside is harrowing, the rips are brutal and urchins are common on the reef. A shortboard covers regular days, and a gun earns its place when it gets big. The lineup gets very busy, the takeoff zone is tight, and the locals know the spot inside out and can be protective of their diamond — the atmosphere stays friendly when you bring humility and respect.

Access

There is a dirt parking lot on the side of the hill, along with free roadside parking. You will also find camping, a surf school and a surf shop.
