Crushers (Taranaki) surf guide

Crushers is a surf spot located in Taranaki, New Zealand, along the surf highway. It’s a bit of a hidden gem that you can find by heading south-west from New Plymouth. After passing through Warea, you’ll need to turn right onto either Bayly Road or Pungarehu Road. Just keep driving along Coast Road until you hit the beach breaks, which are situated just north of the left-hand point known as Fin Fuckers. The vibe here tends to be pretty chill, often with fewer surfers around, so it’s a nice spot if you're looking for some space.

The surf at Crushers is generally best when the swell comes in from the southwest, which is the optimal direction. It can handle swell sizes starting from about 2 feet (0.6 meters) and works well on both boulders and sand. You’ve got options for left and right waves, making it suitable for intermediate surfers looking to have a go. For the best conditions, east winds are preferred, and it's worth noting that mid to high tide usually produces the best waves here.

When you’re heading to Crushers, there are lay-bys along Coast Road where you can park while you grab your board and hit the water. The area offers a laid-back atmosphere, and because it’s less crowded, you can enjoy your session without too much hassle. Just make sure you check the local conditions before you paddle out!
