Overview
Crystals is a shallow sand beachbreak peak by the rock jetty at the north end of Atlantic City, next to Absecon Inlet. It forms close to the jetty on northeast swells, with steep, short lefts and occasional rights breaking back toward the rocks.
It can be fun on better days, but it wonโt hold as much size as the breaks just to the south.
When It Works
Crystals is moderately consistent through autumn and winter, with the main season running September through March. The optimal swell direction is northeast, and the spot is usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3 m / 10 ft.
Swell can also come from northeast through east-southeast to south. Bigger norโeaster surf can produce lefts off the jetty, though paddling can get tough on bigger days.
Wind and Tide
The offshore wind direction is west. Northwest to north-northwest winds are also noted as good here, and the beach angle plus jetty can give it protection with a northeast wind.
Low to mid tide is generally best, and a rising tide is better.
Local Tips
This is mostly an intermediate spot, popular with shortboarders and bodyboarders. The crowd is moderate, and the lineup is somewhat reserved but usually manageable, with everyone generally getting a turn.
Watch for rip currents and summer tourists.
Access
Parking is limited, with free, paid, metered, roadside, and restricted options around the area. Free parking may come with some risk, as rip-offs are common nearby, so keep belongings secure. Tags are usually not needed.
