Overview
Cumberland Island is a sandy beachbreak wrapping up the final miles of Georgia's coast, set along a national seashore. The waves are comparable to nearby Fernandina Beach, peeling both left and right over a sand bottom.
When It Works
The break picks up swell from east-northeast to southeast and works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 2.1 m / 7 ft. Autumn is the prime season here. It rates below average and is more of a fun little wave on its day, so it's worth considering when Fernandina looks fun or the weekend crowds are building elsewhere.
Wind and Tide
Look for west offshore wind, with a workable wind window running from west-southwest to northwest. It comes in best on mid to high tide, and a rising tide is generally the better call. Strong winds out of the northeast or southwest can stir up currents, but it stays pretty mellow otherwise.
Local Tips
The wave suits everyone from beginners to experts, and you can ride just about anything, from shortboards and fish to funboards, longboards, and SUPs. The lineup stays quiet and can feel a little reserved.

Getting here takes some effort: it's boat or ferry only from St. Mary's, Georgia.
