Cuyutlan is a surf spot located in Mexico known for its black sand beaches and powerful waves. It can get quite busy, especially when the swell is right. The area has a mix of different breaks and caters mostly to intermediate surfers looking for a challenge.

The waves at Cuyutlan are mainly beach breaks, which can produce both left and right rides. The spot is best with a small to medium S-W swell, as larger swells often lead to close-outs. Swell sizes can effectively handle from about 0.3 meters (1 ft) up to around 2 meters (6.5 ft) or more, depending on the conditions. The optimal swell direction is South-West, but it can also work with South and North-West swells. The preferred wind direction is from the North-East, and it works across low, mid, and high tides, making it versatile as the conditions change.

Further up the beach, you’ll find the Tepalcates inlet groynes, which help manage the swell and wind, shaping the sand nicely for good waves. La Termo offers some hot barrels right at the power station outflow, while La Dos is a decent spot for wedges along the cliffs and provides some shelter from north winds. Overall, this spot is best suited for surfers with some experience, especially when the waves get above shoulder height.
