Dauphin Island Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Dauphin Island is a fickle Alabama beachbreak that rarely comes to life. With only about 50 miles of swell exposure and shallow sand flats that hamper swell production, it needs a good dose of south to southeast windswell or, better yet, a strong tropical system to turn on. The Dauphin Island Pier is the most reliable spot along the island. When a well-directed hurricane swell lines up with north to northwest winds, an assortment of soft lefts and rights break over the sand bottom. Even at its best, the surf here stays small, weak, and short-lived.

When It Works

The season runs through autumn and winter, roughly September to March. The break draws swell from southwest to southeast (SW-SE) and is usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, with waves ranging anywhere from knee-high to overhead. Consistency is the catch: it rarely breaks, and when it does the waves tend to be disorganized. If you catch a swell here, make the most of it.

Wind and Tide

Look for north (N) offshore wind, with a workable window stretching from north to north-northeast (N-NNE). The break can work across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.

Local Tips

This is friendly, forgiving terrain for beginners and intermediates. If you can swim, you can surf here, and it takes just about any board, from shortboards and fish to funboards and longboards. The lineup stays quiet and can feel a little reserved.

Access

Dauphin Island is open to the public year-round for a nominal environmental fee. Keep the Gulf's realities in mind: water quality has often fallen short of standards, and hazards include sharks, jellyfish, and pollution.
