Overview
DeHaven Creek/Howard Creek is a pair of similar, smallish beachbreaks sitting side by side within Westport-Union Landing State Beach. Both break over sand and throw up peaky lefts and rights, with several rocks scattered through them. The setting is bare and open, and both spots are easy to spot from Highway 1.
When It Works
These are small-wave beachbreaks that need the right kind of swell to come alive. They draw swell across the south to north (S-N) window and are usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft. Small, peaky, glassy swells are what you want here.
Wind and Tide
Clean, glassy conditions matter most, so aim for windless sessions. Look for east (E) offshore wind, and time your surf around mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Access
Both breaks are reached through the barren Westport-Union Landing State Beach, so keep an eye out for the creek markers along Highway 1 as you drive in. Parking is free, both in the lot and along the roadside, and there is cheap camping in the park if you want to stay close to the surf.
