Deadmans is a small boulder-reef peak tucked into Shelter Cove, and it's the most popular wave in the Cove. It breaks over an uneven reef and offers both lefts and rights off the peak.
When It Works
Deadmans pulls in swell from south through north (S-N), with a south swell the best match. On a solid south, the peak stretches into lined-up walls that shoot all the way to the black sand. It works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft and is moderately consistent, so it delivers reliably when a good south fills in.
Wind and Tide
Look for a northeast wind to groom it clean. The reef can work through low, mid, and high tide, but a rising tide is the better call.
Local Tips
This one suits intermediate surfers, and you can expect a moderately busy lineup when it's on. Keep in mind that great white sharks range through these waters.
Access
Getting here means a long, steeply twisting mountain road down into the Cove. Once you arrive, park at the boat ramp and walk down the beach to the knoll.
