Del Mar Rivermouth surf guide

Del Mar Rivermouth is a surf spot located at the mouth of the river that flows into the ocean. It's situated between northern Del Mar and southern Solana Beach, making it accessible from both areas. While it isn’t known for being an epic surf destination, it does have its moments, especially when conditions align just right. This spot tends to come alive after a heavy rainfall, which is a bit rare in Southern California, and can handle a smaller west swell.

The surf here can break both left and right, offering a bit of variety for surfers. Generally, it’s a rivermouth wave that works best with south or northwest swells and handles sizes around 1 ft (about 0.3 meters). Most of the time, it’s more of an average beachbreak, but when everything lines up, you can score some fun waves. The ideal conditions usually come with east winds and at low to mid tide, making those times worth checking out if you’re in the area.

Accessing the spot is straightforward—there are parking options at the southernmost part of Solana Beach or the northernmost part of Del Mar, and then it’s just a walk down to the beach. Since it’s a rivermouth spot, the sand can shift, affecting how the waves break, so keep an eye on that when you're heading out to surf.
