Doran Beach is a crescent of hard-packed beachbreak about a mile south of downtown Bodega Bay. It is sheltered, shallow, and surprisingly powerful, facing south into a bay that tends to close out more often than not. When it does line up, the waves are hollow with plenty of punch, though there is not much length to the ride.
When It Works
This is a springtime spot that comes alive when the surf is too big everywhere else. It draws swell from south through west-southwest to northwest (S-WSW-NW), whether that is a large winter groundswell or a summer south swell wrapping in. Breaking over sand with both lefts and rights, it is usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, roughly chest high to overhead. Shape is often mediocre, but it will scratch the itch through the soggy dregs of winter.
Wind and Tide
Because the beach faces south, north (N) winds blow straight offshore, and northwest winds groom it well too, which is what makes it a spring standout. Southerly winds ruin it, so skip it when they blow. It can work across low, mid, and high tide, but a rising tide is the better call, and high tide cuts down the close-outs.
Local Tips
Doran is about as beginner-friendly as it gets in the area thanks to its shallow, sheltered setup, but do not underestimate it: it can throw pounding tubes when it turns on. Shortboards, bodyboards, and skimboards all suit the wave. The lineup stays quiet and can feel a little reserved.

Exit Highway 1 onto Doran Beach Road to reach the sand, with camping nearby if you want to post up for a swell.
