Overview
El Chinchorro is a shifty sand-bottom beachbreak right on the doorstep of Santo Domingo, just off the road east of the oil tanks that sit east of the main harbour. Think of it as a Playa Hermosa-style setup: sometimes wobbly, often a lot better in the water than it looks from the shore. Rides are quick and short, and both rights and lefts come through. The water can get a little dirty at times, but the paddle out is pretty easy and there aren't any real hazards to worry about.
When It Works
Swell arrives from east-southeast through south, and the bank is usable from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, which lines up with the head high to a couple of feet overhead range this place likes. Spring, autumn, and winter are the seasons to keep an eye on it. When it comes together, it's a good wave.
Wind and Tide
Look for northwest offshore wind, with a workable wind window running from west-northwest around to north. The bank works through the whole tide, and a rising tide is generally the better call.
Local Tips
Grab a shortboard. The quick, shifty sections suit intermediate and experienced surfers best. The lineup stays quiet and can feel a little reserved, so read the water and settle in.
Access
Park at the end of the road near the beach, then walk along the rock wall to get in.
