Overview
El Claron is a left-hand pointbreak wrapping into a long, sweeping bay just north of the little fishing hamlet of Horcon. Despite looking like one endless point, only a couple of spots actually get surfed here, mainly where the rocks curve outwards toward the end of the point. It's one of the closest pointbreaks to Vina del Mar and Valparaiso, peeling over a mix of uneven reef and sand-covered rocks that show more at lower tides, with nice views through the pine trees on the hill.
When It Works
The wave draws swell from south to west, and the more southerly it runs the better it breaks, with southwest (SW) the best match. It's usable from 1.2 m / 4 ft to 3 m / 10 ft and really comes into its own once the swell picks up, letting you tuck into the lee of the point while the nearby beachbreaks turn into double-overhead mush. A swell with too much west in it has an annoying tendency to close the wave out. It's only moderately consistent, but a decent call through the autumn and winter season when everything lines up.
Wind and Tide
El Claron sits well protected from south (S) winds through to the southwest, which is exactly when it's worth a check. It works on low and mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an intermediate-friendly wave best suited to a shortboard. The takeoff zone is fairly tight, so expect a moderately busy lineup when it's on, with a somewhat reserved feel in the water.
Access
Park in town and walk back, or leave the car at the top of the hill and scramble down to the break.
