Elliot Bay Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Elliot Bay is an idyllic, clear-water beachbreak tucked just south of the Bay of Islands on New Zealand's east coast, north of Whangarei. The peaks break over sand and peel both left and right. One of its best traits is timing: it often has rideable waves when the rest of the coast has gone flat.

When It Works

The bay draws swell from the northeast through southeast, with an east swell the best match, and it comes to life on just about any east swell rolling into the region. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft. Consistency is a real strength here, so waves show up more often than not, and the quality is genuinely good when everything lines up.

Wind and Tide

Look for a west offshore wind to groom the faces. The beachbreak works across low, mid, and high tide, though a rising tide is generally the better call.

Local Tips

The mellow beachbreak peaks make Elliot Bay a friendly option for beginners. Expect a busy lineup when it's working, as the reliable waves draw a crowd despite the tricky access.

Access

Getting here takes some effort. From Whangarei, head north on Western Hills Drive (State Highway 1), turn right onto Russell Road, then left to stay on Russell Road, and right onto Rawhiti Road, following it round to Elliot Bay and down to the beach. The final stretch crosses private farmland, where an honesty box on the fence lets you pay your way in. Parking is restricted, and you'll find more pristine, isolated breaks scattered to the north.
