Etel is a beach break that shapes sand into both lefts and rights along this stretch of the French coast. At first glance the waves often look like a close-out, but once the wind swings offshore, tubular sections open up and become makeable. It's worth checking the Magouëro rocks nearby while you size things up.
When It Works
The bank draws swell from southwest to west (SW-W), with southwest (SW) lining things up best. It's usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft. Consistency is moderate, so it won't be on every day, but it delivers when swell and wind come together.
Wind and Tide
Look for northeast (NE) offshore wind to clean up the faces and coax those tube sections into shape. It works on low and mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is a wave for experienced surfers, rewarding above-average skill and confidence in the water. Vicious currents run through here, so stay alert and pick your moment. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's on.
