Figure Eight and Shell Islands mark the north end of Wrightsville Beach in North Carolina, a pair of sandy beach breaks that peel both right and left. Shell Island sits just past the high-rise hotel at the tip of Wrightsville, while Figure Eight Island stretches north beyond the inlet as a private community. It is a decent stretch of beach that has its moments when the wind and swell line up, and when the rest of Wrightsville looks flat, Shell Island is often the spot worth checking first.
When It Works
The beach draws swell from east through south, and south swell is the pick here. Tropical south swells in particular have produced excellent conditions along these islands. Autumn is the prime window, with the whole setup leaning storm dependent: tropical cyclones through late summer and fall, then frontal systems carrying into winter and spring. It is less powerful and consistent than the Outer Banks, but it comes through more often than not. The break works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 2.1 m / 7 ft.
Wind and Tide
Look for northwest offshore wind to clean things up, with a workable wind window running from west-northwest to north-northwest. The banks break on low and mid tide, and a rising tide is generally the better call.
Local Tips
This one suits intermediate and expert surfers, and the mellow, playful waves tend to appeal to longboarders. Just about anything goes board-wise, from shortboards, fish, and funboards to longboards, SUPs, skimboards, and bodyboards. The lineup stays quiet and can feel a little reserved, so expect a low-key session rather than a crowd.
Access
Getting onto Figure Eight Island takes a pass to cross the bridge, since it is a gated private community. Otherwise, paddle across from the north end of Shell Island. During very low tides you can almost walk over. A good trick is to read how Shell Island is picking up the swell to gauge what Figure Eight is doing.
