Flagler Beach Pier is the one true break in a relaxed beach town south of St. Augustine, past Marineland. It's a sand-bottomed beach and pier setup that peels both right and left, and while it sits sort of off the radar, it genuinely gets good. There's usually more than one option on offer, from the shorebreak to outside peaks, and which one is working mostly comes down to the tide.
When It Works
The break draws swell from north-northeast through east to southeast, and it lines up best on a northeast to east-northeast (NE-ENE) swell. It's usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft, so you'll find anything from waist-high runners to overhead days depending on the size. Autumn, winter, and spring are the prime months, and hurricane season can deliver too. The paddle is easy when it's small, but expect a solid effort when a bigger swell is breaking outside.
Wind and Tide
Look for west-southwest (WSW) offshore wind, with a workable window running from south through west-southwest to northwest (S-WSW-NW). It comes in at low and mid tide, and a rising tide is generally the better call.
Local Tips
This one suits intermediate and expert surfers, and it's friendly to a wide quiver, from shortboards, fish, and funboards to longboards, bodyboards, skimboards, and bodysurfing. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it works, empty through winter but busier in summer, with a low-key, slightly reserved feel, so show some respect in the water. Keep an eye on the pilings and the sharks that tend to hang around them.
