Flatrock is a sucking, dredging right-hander that breaks over a rock ledge in front of the pools. It throws air drops and steps out of a tight take-off zone, which is why it pulls in bodyboarders and tube hunters when the swell shows up.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from northeast through east-southeast to south (NE-ESE-S), with southeast (SE) the best match. It comes alive when moderate southeast swells arrive, and it works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft. It is moderately consistent, so it is not always perfect, but there are plenty of days when the setup lines up. On smaller northeast swells the rock ledge comes into sharp focus.
Wind and Tide
Look for northwest (NW) offshore wind to clean it up. The ledge works on mid and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This one is for experts. The dredging take-off and shallow ledge leave no margin for error, and you can expect a busy lineup when it turns on.

There is a car park with free parking, along with paid and roadside options nearby. Facilities include restrooms, showers, a lifeguard, and a surf shop.
