Flies is an average beachbreak that runs along the sand from East Hampton through Southampton down to Shinnecock Inlet. It breaks right and stays fairly consistent, so there is usually something to ride when a swell is in the water.
When It Works
The bank draws swell from east through south to southwest (E-S-SW), with southwest swell the best match, and it works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3 m / 10 ft. The eastern jetty picks up longer rights on a southwest swell, while a southeast swell can throw up some hollow wedges. The far side of the inlet only comes to life in bigger swells.
Wind and Tide
Look for a northwest offshore wind to clean it up. It works on low and mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
The waves here are beginner-friendly, and you can expect a moderately busy lineup when it is working.
Access
There is a surf shop nearby, and parking runs from a car park with free parking to paid and roadside spots. Access gets trickier in summer, when these exclusive suburbs require extra town tags to park.
