Overview
Florence - South Jetty sits at the Siuslaw River mouth, between massive rock jetties on a sand bottom. The South Jetty angles south, making a sheltered nook for lefts and rights just outside Florence.
When It Works
The spot is consistent and works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3 m / 10 ft. It takes swell from south through west-southwest to northwest, with southwest the optimal swell direction.
On small north-wind summer days, it can pick up south and southwest swell in the sheltered nook. On big west swells at lower tides, a left can peel between the jetties off the south jetty, around a third the size of the outside swell.
Wind and Tide
The offshore wind direction is northeast. Low, mid, and high tides can all be in play, with a rising tide better.
Be careful between the jetties. A lot of water drains through here, and an outgoing tide can sweep you from the break out past the bar. Check the tide charts.
Local Tips
Best suited to intermediate surfers. It can get busy, and the local scene may not feel especially welcoming.
There are moderate shark concerns here.
Access
Cross the river to Glenada and turn into the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area. Follow the narrow blacktop for about 5 mi / 8 km; when the road turns into a moonscape of giant potholes, youโre close. Walk out on the jetty and check both sides.
Thereโs a car park with free parking, plus restrooms, showers, camping, a lifeguard, and a surf shop.
