Overview
Flynn's Reef is a right-hand reef break on the north side of Phillip Island's western tip, a stretch better known for its penguins. The rights zip down the point in thick walls built for top-to-bottom carving, and the wave holds its shape even when the wind turns onshore.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from south through southwest (S-SW), with southwest (SW) the best match. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3 m / 10 ft and is moderately consistent, so expect worthwhile windows when the swell lines up rather than surf every day.
Wind and Tide
Offshore winds blow from the east (E), and the point stays clean across a wide window from northeast through south, part of why it pulls a crowd. Surf it on mid to high tide, with a rising tide the better call. The uneven reef turns shallow as the tide drops, so ride it on the push.
Local Tips
Flynn's suits intermediate surfers, and the lineup gets busy when it's working.
