Flys is a fickle beach break near the Eastern Shinnecock Inlet Jetty that turns on when everything lines up. It breaks left over a sandy bottom, and while it can be inconsistent, it delivers one of the better beachbreak sessions around once a proper swell shows up.
When It Works
The bank draws swell from east through south to southwest, and south-southeast is the best match. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, covering everything from waist-high days up to well overhead. The season runs from autumn into winter, roughly September through March. Paddling out is doable, though it can get tough on bigger swells.
Wind and Tide
Look for a north-northeast offshore wind, with a workable wind window stretching from northwest to north-northeast. It's best on mid tide, and a rising tide is generally the better call.
Local Tips
Flys suits intermediate and expert surfers, and it handles a wide range of boards, from shortboards and fish to funboards, longboards, and bodyboards. The lineup stays fairly quiet, usually just a small crew of regulars, and the vibe is mostly mellow.
Access
Getting here is the hard part. Private estates limit coastal access, and driving into the state park requires a permit, so finding the spot and sorting parking takes real effort. The water is generally clean, and the main thing to watch for is simply getting lost trying to track it down.
