Folly Beach Pier Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Folly Beach Pier is a sand-bottomed beachbreak that peels on both sides of the pier, offering lefts and rights. The waves here are noticeably less powerful than what you'll find at the Washout, but a touch punchier than most other South Carolina beachbreaks. Don't expect anything huge, though; the spot won't really hold much more than a foot overhead. It's a modest break by wider standards, but a reliable option along this stretch of coast.

When It Works

Northeast swells are what light this place up, sending long, occasionally barreling lefts down the south side of the pier. The swell window runs from northeast through east-southeast to south (NE-ESE-S), and the break works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.1 m / 7 ft, roughly knee-high to overhead. Autumn is the season to watch, with the best run of waves landing between September and December.

Wind and Tide

Look for a northwest (NW) offshore wind to clean things up. Tide makes a big difference: mid tide is where it comes alive, serving steeper, more shapely peaks, and a rising tide is generally the better call. Push too high and the waves mush out; drop too low and it closes out over about 4 ft.

Local Tips

This is an approachable wave that suits beginners and intermediates, and it takes everything from shortboards and fishes to funboards and longboards. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's on, with a generally easygoing atmosphere. Getting out is easy, hug the pier for a dry-hair paddle-out. Keep in mind you can't surf within 200 ft of the pier, and watch for jellyfish, passing jet skis, and the occasional shark.

Access

There's a car park along with paid and roadside options, though space is convenient but limited and comes at a fee. You'll also find restrooms and a surf shop on hand.
