Foz de Lizandro surf guide

Foz de Lizandro is a coastal surf spot located near Ericeira, known for its sandy beach and relaxed vibe. It’s a good option if you want to avoid the crowds at some of the more popular reef breaks in the area. The spot works well with varying sandbanks, and on certain days, you can catch some fun little waves akin to what you’d find at a standard California beach break. Overall, it offers a pretty chill surfing experience.

This beach typically gets NW to WNW swells, handling sizes from about 1.2 meters (4 ft) to 2.4 meters (8 ft). The waves can break both left and right, with most of them rolling over sand. The best tides to hit are low to mid, especially as the tide moves in and out. For wind, an east direction works best, and paddling out isn’t too tough, making it suitable for beginners and intermediates alike. Depending on the conditions, you might find some closeouts, but there's usually enough action to entertain a variety of skill levels. Board types like shortboards, funboards, longboards, and even fish can all work well here.

Getting to Foz de Lizandro is easy thanks to a large parking lot right by the beach. The scene is pretty laid-back, with a mix of surfers, families, and people enjoying beach games like volleyball. While you might have to contend with some bodyboarders or surf camps, the local vibe remains mellow enough for everyone to catch some waves. The best time to surf here is generally in the autumn and spring, as winter conditions can be a bit tricky with wind and weather changes.

Wind certainty

Wind certainty tells you how much the weather models agree on the forecast.

  • High certainty: Models agree closely; forecast is reliable.
  • Medium certainty: Some disagreement; conditions may shift slightly.
  • Low certainty: Models diverge; treat forecast with caution.

We calculate this by comparing wind speed, gust and direction from multiple models (like GFS, ECMWF, Arome, and Harmonie) and seeing how closely they match. They are weighted, meaning that some models count more than others, depending on how good they are for a certain spot.

Forecast Cheat Sheet

Short on time? Focus on wave energy. It’s the best single metric to gauge how big and powerful the waves will be.

Click any table cell to jump to that forecast hour. The map will update with forecast arrows, so you can see if wind and swell direction are lining up.

Use the table sidebar to switch units for height and speed.

Models and Updates

Surfnerd blends multiple global and local wind and swell models using advanced interpolation and spatial techniques to create an "ensemble" forecast. Forecasts are refreshed hourly.

Surf Predictions

Our AI-driven algorithm scores surf quality, shown by green, orange, and gray dots. Each forecast hour is rated for wind, swell, and tide quality, then combined into an overall score. Here’s the scale:

Perfect
Good
Average
Bad or No Data

Session logs also feed the algorithm — the more you log, the smarter your forecasts get.
