Gibara is a fast, hollow left that breaks over a shallow shelf of dead coral just west of the pretty port town of Gibara. The wave is short and intense, with a real tube section, but it needs a good swell to get going. More waves shadow the road back toward Playa Caletones, where a fringe of reef holds possibilities on northeast swells.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from northwest through northeast (NW-NE), with northeast (NE) swell the best match. It works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.2 m / 4 ft, so it wants a bit of size before it fires. It can be inconsistent, which makes it worth timing your session around a solid pulse.
Wind and Tide
Look for a southwest (SW) offshore wind to clean it up. It can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an expert's wave, given how fast and hollow it runs over shallow dead coral. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it is working.
