Haleiwa Surf Forecast Guide

Haleiwa is a powerful right-hand reef break on the North Shore, and the town behind it is the area's commercial hub as well as a proving ground for many of Hawaii's best surfers, past and present. The wave breaks over an uneven reef off Ali'i Beach Park. On a small day the broken peaks can look easy and inviting, but that first impression is deceptive.

When It Works

When an overhead west-to-northwest swell hits, a challenging, fast right jumps the reef and fires off lightning-quick walls and hollow hooks all the way through to a shallow inside shutdown section known as the 'Toilet Bowl'. The break draws swell from west to northwest (W-NW), with northwest (NW) the best match, and it stays consistent. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 6.1 m / 20 ft.

Wind and Tide

Look for southeast (SE) offshore wind. Haleiwa can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.

Local Tips

This is an intermediate wave that ramps up fast with size, so the bigger days really are for experienced surfers, while beginners can still ride the shorebreak reforms. Expect a very busy lineup when it works, plenty of sets on the head, and an ever-present rip to fight.

Access

Facilities are well covered here, with restrooms, showers, a lifeguard, a surf school, and a surf shop. Parking includes a car park with free parking, along with paid and roadside options.
