Overview
Hendaye Plage is a long, sheltered beachbreak right on the French border with Spain, with a wide choice of peaks spread along the sand. The waves stay mellow and it rarely gets big or heavy, so it earns its reputation as the answer when the rest of the coast is closing out in bigger storms. It isn't a standout for wave quality, but the spread of banks and the sheltered setting give it real value on the right day.
When It Works
It comes to life on medium to big northwest (NW) swells, drawing from the west to north (W-N) window, and only really gets going in the bigger swells that run from October through March. The most consistent banks sit at the western edge by the Sokoburu jetty for mellow, loggable rides, and in front of Le Casino in the middle of the bay. Over at the eastern edge, the twin rocks of Les Deux Jumeaux sit above a patch of reef that can groom fun rights when enough swell filters in. It's moderately consistent and works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft.
Wind and Tide
Look for south (S) offshore wind. The beach works through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is about as friendly as a beachbreak gets for beginners, which explains the sheer number of surf schools here. Funboards, longboards, and SUPs all make sense in the soft, forgiving waves. Expect a fairly quiet lineup, with an atmosphere that can feel a little reserved.
Access
There's roadside parking and a car park along the seafront, though it's pay parking and gets very busy in summer and when it's on. Facilities include restrooms, showers, a lifeguard, and surf schools.
