Horace Caldwell Pier is a sand-bottom pier break in Port Aransas that peaks up on both sides and serves consistent bowls, breaking both left and right. The waves are usually softer than what you'll find farther south, and on its days it earns a reputation as one of the best longboard waves in the state. Which side fires depends on swell direction, the sandbanks, and the tide.
When It Works
The pier draws swell from east to south (E-S), with southeast (SE) the best match. It's a consistent spot that's usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 2.1 m / 7 ft, ranging from waist high to a few feet overhead. Spring and autumn tend to deliver the most, so late summer into fall and late winter into mid-spring are the windows to watch.
Wind and Tide
Look for northwest (NW) offshore wind. It works through low and mid tide, and mid tide is the sweet setup when the swell lines up, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is a beginner-friendly wave that suits a wide range of boards, from shortboards and fish to funboards and longboards. Expect a dense lineup at the best peaks near the pier when there's swell, though it spreads out the farther you get from the structure. The atmosphere is neutral and the local vibe stays relatively positive, so keep it that way. The rip alongside the pier makes getting out easy, but you'll need to paddle against the current to hold your position. Watch out for less-experienced surfers in the lineup.
