Huntington Pier surf guide

Huntington Pier is one of the most well-known surf spots in Southern California, boasting a rich history and a deep connection to surf culture. It's a popular destination for surfers of all levels, especially in the summer when crowds flood the area. Located at the end of the pier, surfers can find a mix of both amateur waves and competitive breaks. The atmosphere is typically laid-back, but be prepared for a jam-packed lineup when the swell is pumping.

This spot picks up swells from the south and northwest, making it pretty versatile. It can handle small to medium swell sizes, ranging from 1 ft to around 6 ft (0.3 to 1.8 meters). On the north side, you can catch decent right-handers, especially during winter swells, while the south side is known for its consistent lefts. Both sides can work at various tide levels—low, mid, and high. For the best experience, a northeast wind is preferred, so keep an eye on the forecast. This makes it a suitable spot for beginners to get comfortable with surfing.

The environment here is fairly reliable, with consistent waves due to the sand bottom. However, it can easily get blown out during peak hours, especially in the summer when swimmers are out in full force. Access to the beach is available through pay-parking lots at First Street, Huntington Street, and Beach Boulevard. A note for surfers looking to escape the crowds: checking further north can reveal some good peaks where the service ramp meets the beach, and also by the end of Golden West Street.
