Overview
Jacksonville Beach Pier, known to locals as Jax Pier, sits a few blocks north of Beach Blvd and is the area's dependable high-tide break. A spread of peaks around the pier gives everyone room, and it holds both lefts and rights across a wide range of swells and conditions. The water often looks murky, but much of that tint is natural tannins washing down from the St. Johns River.
When It Works
Jax Pier breaks over sand as a mix of beach and pier peaks, pulling in swell from north-northeast through east to southeast (NNE-E-SE). It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft, so it covers everything from thigh-high days to overhead surf. It stays reliable through autumn, winter, and spring, with hurricane season adding to the mix, and when it turns on you'll find good waves and plenty of talent in the water.
Wind and Tide
Tide is the key here: the spot comes alive from mid to high tide, with a rising tide the better call. West (W) wind blows straight offshore, and there's a workable wind window running from south-southwest through west to north-northwest (SSW-W-NNW).
Local Tips
Expect a very busy lineup when it's on, since it zoos out on the good days, though the atmosphere stays friendly. It suits every level from beginner to expert and works for shortboards, fish, funboards, and longboards. Paddling out is easy overall, but you'll be battling for position once the crowd fills in.
Access
Parking in the lot is easy; the hard part is finding a wave once the lineup is packed. Keep an eye on your face and your car in the shuffle rather than worrying about the sand underneath.
