Jones Beach State Park surf guide

Jones Beach State Park is a popular surf spot located along a stretch of unstabilized beach that runs from Fire Island Inlet to Jones Beach, covering about 10 miles (16 km). This area can offer decent sandbars, especially on good days. While it can get crowded, there are options to find some space if you're willing to walk a bit away from the parking areas. Keep in mind that even though it’s a well-known location, the facilities can be a bit sparse along the coast.

The surf at Jones Beach tends to favor a southeast swell direction, but you can also catch waves coming from the east and south. It can handle swell sizes starting at 2 feet (0.6 meters), but the best conditions come around low to mid tide. High tide isn’t ideal because it can create a deeper trough between the banks. You’ll find left and right waves breaking over sand, making it suitable for beginners. If the wind is coming from the north, that’s a good sign for cleaner conditions.

To avoid the crowds, it’s a good idea to venture down the beach a bit. The large parking lots make it easy to get to the water, but walking a little further can lead you to less congested spots. Just be prepared for some distance between facilities, so plan accordingly. Overall, Jones Beach is worth checking out if you're looking for a fun day of surfing in a friendly environment.
