Jongensfontein is a right-hand reefbreak just west of Mossel Bay that comes into its own when nearby Stillbay is too small. It breaks over uneven reef and sand, and on a good day it delivers a long ride with some sucky, hollow sections over the craggy bottom.
When It Works
At heart this is a southeast swell spot, drawing swell from east through south to southwest (E-S-SW) with southeast (SE) the best match. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft. Southwest swell doesn't suit the place, so aim for those cleaner southeast swells instead. There's almost always something to ride here and it's moderately consistent, though the quality is often below par.
Wind and Tide
Look for northwest (NW) offshore wind. The reef prefers lower water, working on low and mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call. High tides don't do it any favors, and southwest winds don't agree with the spot either.
Local Tips
The hollow sections firing over that craggy reef make it best suited to intermediate surfers. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's working.
