Keramas is a right-hand reef break with a big reputation for barrels and high-performance surfing, and it now draws the pro contest scene. The wave breaks over a jagged lava reef and opens up straight from the drop, giving you a wall to work before it closes out on the inside. On its day it can barrel all the way through; other times it leaves an open face for turns and aerials, particularly on the steeper end section.
When It Works
Sitting on the east coast, Keramas picks up plenty of swell and can be surprisingly consistent as long as the onshore wind stays light. It draws swell from south to southwest, with a south swell the best match. The break is usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft.
Wind and Tide
Look for northwest offshore wind, and the light land breezes early in the morning are the pick of the day. Keramas is sensitive to the tide: it can work through low, mid, and high, but it prefers higher, incoming water, so a rising tide is the better call.
Local Tips
This one suits intermediate surfers who are comfortable sitting on a reef. It gets crowded early in the morning, and the lineup isn't always the friendliest, with some pushy ex-pats and surf guides in the mix. When the swell picks up, keep an eye on the current.
