Overview
La Cúpula is regularly picked as a national contest site and is regarded as the best wave in its zone. It's a long left with several tubular sections peeling over magma rock reef, with an occasional shorter right on offer too. Locals compare it to Tavarua, which tells you plenty about the quality on a good day.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from south through west-southwest to northwest (S-WSW-NW), with southwest the best match. It works from 1.2 m / 4 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft, and locals reckon it really comes into its own on the bigger end, roughly 6-12 ft (2-4 m). Consistency is moderate, so it pays to time your session for when the swell genuinely lines up.
Wind and Tide
Look for a southeast offshore wind. The reef can work across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an expert-level wave, with a takeoff and tubular sections over uneven reef that reward experience. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's on. Friendly locals may show you how to handle the rocks sticking out in front of the wave, along with the urchins and seashells covering the seafloor.
