Overview
La Gravière is Hossegor's legendary tube spot, a beach break over sand set on an old gravel pit. Dredging at the rivermouth has hurt wave quality in the past, but it has come back with a vengeance and hosted pro competitions in huge surf, including the 2011 Quik Pro. On its day it throws heavy, thick-lipped barrels that break perilously close to shore and often close out, snapping more boards than just about anywhere.
When It Works
The spot draws swell from west to north, with northwest swell the best match. Left and right peaks stand up over the shallow inside bars, and waves sometimes white-cap outside, roll in, and reform on the inside. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 4.6 m / 15 ft and is moderately consistent. Swell period makes or breaks it: short-period swell can leave it messy and inconsistent, while long-period swell lines it up and sends it bombing.
Wind and Tide
Look for east offshore wind. It can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call. The tidal range radically affects the window for ideal conditions, so keep an eye on where the tide sits.
Local Tips
This is an expert-only wave that humbles just about everyone but the barrel specialists and the pros. Expect a busy lineup when it turns on. The rip speed climbs in step with the swell, and on the biggest days only the tow crew can get into the sets before the current sweeps them south.
Access
Facilities are down the beach at Hossegor's Front de Mer. Park along Blvd de Front de Mer (D79) and use the slatted access paths through the dunes, or park at La Nord and walk up the beach. Parking is free and roadside.
