La Isla (Punta Hermosa) surf guide

La Isla, located in Punta Hermosa, is a popular surf spot known for its proximity to the main resort area. The spot features a rocky island that’s connected to the mainland by a causeway. It offers a consistent wave setup in a scenic environment, making it a nice option for surfers looking to enjoy some time in the water.

The surf here tends to pick up well with southwest swells, but it can also handle waves from the south and west. On a good day, you can expect waves around 3 ft (approximately 1 meter) to double overhead. The right breaks offer a fun, lengthy wall starting with thick, rolling sections, perfect for carving and gouging. As you ride towards the inside, you might find some steeper sections with potential cover-ups. The left tends to be softer, mainly requiring cutbacks due to the gentle whitewash. Be sure to check the tide as it works well at low, mid, and high heights. Wind from the northeast is preferred for cleaner conditions, and this spot is best suited for intermediate surfers.

Weekends and holidays can get crowded, so if you're looking for a quieter session, try to hit it during the week. The paddle out can be long at about 350m, but jumping in from the causeway can save you some energy. Watch out for sharp rocks and urchins, which are common in the area. If you’re feeling adventurous, there are other waves further out and at the bombora reef at Kon Tiki for those keen on tackling bigger rides like Pico Alto.
