Overview
La Paz is the inside section of Punta Roca, the nearly half-mile-long cobble and boulder righthander at La Libertad. It's an easier, less critical wave than the top of the point, breaking over cobbles, boulders, and patches of uneven reef and sand. When a big swell is running it can turn excellent, throwing the occasional kegging right, and it sits closer in and less crowded than the main peak. The inside doesn't offer everything Punta Roca does, but it's a genuinely good wave and you can pick off a few nice ones. Many surfers paddle out here and make the trek up the point by water.
When It Works
This is a right-hand point that draws swell from south to west. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, roughly chest high to overhead and bigger. The most consistent surf comes through spring and summer.
Wind and Tide
Look for a northwest offshore wind to clean it up. It surfs on low and mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call. Watch it at low tide, where the wave gets shallow and the rocks turn slippery and awkward to negotiate.
Local Tips
La Paz suits intermediate surfers riding a shortboard or fish. Expect a busy lineup when it's working, though the crowd is lighter and the vibe more mellow than up at Punta Roca. It's popular with locals and with bodyboarders sheltering from the onshores, and the lineup can feel somewhat reserved.
Access
Park at Rotherham's or another restaurant's lot on the beach in front of La Paz.
