La Perouse Bay surf guide

La Perouse Bay is a rocky surf spot located on the beautiful and remote southern coastline of Maui. This area is known for its scenic views and relatively uncrowded waves. The access road leads right to the beach, but you might need a 4WD depending on the current road conditions. Entering and exiting the water can be tricky due to the rocky beach, especially when the swell gets solid and consistent.

The surf here can be pretty powerful and clean, with left waves that generally work best during the summer season. La Perouse can handle swell sizes from about 5ft to 15ft (1.5m to 4.5m), with the best conditions coming from the South to SouthWest directions. While it can offer good barrels, the waves can also be kind of slopey and fat near the shoulders. You might find it works best around low to mid or mid to high tide. The preferable winds come from the North to East directions, helping to keep the waves clean, especially in the mornings before the trade winds pick up. It's suitable for intermediate to expert surfers, and the long paddles are worth it for the longer rides.

The bottom consists of lava, rock, and coral, so be careful out there. While you might see some sharks occasionally, it’s usually not crowded, allowing for a more relaxed vibe—just be sure to show local humility and respect when you're out. Given its pristine environment, La Perouse Bay is a solid option for those looking to escape the busier surf spots.

Wind certainty

Wind certainty tells you how much the weather models agree on the forecast.

  • High certainty: Models agree closely; forecast is reliable.
  • Medium certainty: Some disagreement; conditions may shift slightly.
  • Low certainty: Models diverge; treat forecast with caution.

We calculate this by comparing wind speed, gust and direction from multiple models (like GFS, ECMWF, Arome, and Harmonie) and seeing how closely they match. They are weighted, meaning that some models count more than others, depending on how good they are for a certain spot.

Forecast Cheat Sheet

Short on time? Focus on wave energy. It’s the best single metric to gauge how big and powerful the waves will be.

Click any table cell to jump to that forecast hour. The map will update with forecast arrows, so you can see if wind and swell direction are lining up.

Use the table sidebar to switch units for height and speed.

Log your surf sessions to compare forecasts with real sessions and sharpen future predictions.

On the map, click a metric label to bring that arrow to the front — handy when arrows overlap.

Models and Updates

Surfnerd blends multiple global and local wind and swell models using advanced interpolation and spatial techniques to create an "ensemble" forecast. Forecasts are refreshed hourly.

Surf Predictions

Our AI-driven algorithm scores surf quality, shown by green, orange, and gray dots. Each forecast hour is rated for wind, swell, and tide quality, then combined into an overall score. Here’s the scale:

Perfect
Good
Average
Bad or No Data

Session logs also feed the algorithm — the more you log, the smarter your forecasts get.
