Overview
La Viuda is a sand-bottomed beachbreak facing southeast that soaks up plenty of swell. Shifting sandbanks often shape up a nice left in the northern corner, and the peaks can turn hollow when it's on. It sits in the Santa Teresa and Punta del Diablo area, one of Uruguay's main surf hubs, with around 15 major spots inside a 25 km (15 mi) drive.
When It Works
The banks draw swell from the northeast through east-southeast to south (NE-ESE-S), with east (E) swell the best match. Peaks peel both left and right over sand, and the spot stays consistent, so there's usually something to ride when swell is running. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft.
Wind and Tide
Look for northwest (NW) offshore wind, though La Viuda holds together in onshore east better than other breaks in the area. It can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
The forgiving sandbanks make this an approachable option for beginners. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's working.
Access
There are restrooms, camping, a surf school, and a surf shop close by, plus free roadside parking.
