Overview
Lafitenia is a classic right-hand point in a sheltered bay on southwest France’s Basque coastline. It breaks over uneven reef and sand, with a steep take-off, a long wall, and the odd hollow inside section before the shorebreak close-out.
The wave can run up to around 250 yards when it lines up, and more west in the swell helps the wall stretch across the bay. In bigger northwest swells, the take-off can shift around and get heavy.
When It Works
The spot is usable from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3 m / 10 ft. The optimal swell direction is northwest, with west to north swells also in the window.
Autumn and winter are the main seasons, especially October to February, though it can be rideable year-round. Consistency is a bit hit and miss.
Wind and Tide
The offshore wind direction is southeast. South to southeast winds are good here, and the headland also gives protection from east winds, even northeast.
Low tide to mid tide works, and a rising tide is better. High tide can kill it when the swell is smaller.
Local Tips
Lafitenia suits intermediate surfers and sees all kinds of boards, from shortboards and fish to funboards and longboards.
It is a busy spot, especially in summer and even in smaller swells. The local crew is large, but the vibe is largely tolerant, if a little reserved.
Paddling is usually average, though the paddle back up the point can get long when it is pumping.
Access
Access is simple. Follow Acotz and park just above Lafitenia Bay. There is a car park with free parking, though parking can be restricted.
Facilities include restrooms, showers, a surf school, and camping on the hill above the wave.
