Lake Cathie is a surf spot located at the Bonny Hills southern end of Rainbow Beach. The surf works best with a southeast swell direction, but it can handle north-east and south swells too. It breaks over uneven reef and sandy bottoms, producing both left and right waves. You might find the surf decent when the swell is around 1ft (0.3m) or higher, especially during low, mid, or high tides. Intermediate surfers will feel comfortable here, but don’t expect it to be world class – it’s generally just okay, though often better than it seems when you first arrive.

This stretch of surf can feel a bit sketchy at times, so being aware of your surroundings is always a good idea. Don't be surprised if it feels a bit lonely out there, and just know that it might not be the most vibrant surf scene, but locals are usually cool with sharing the waves.
