Overview
Lake Cathie is a beachbreak where a cluster of rocks holds the sand on both sides, giving the banks some shape and both lefts and rights. The waves break over a mix of uneven reef and sand, and the spot usually surfs better than it looks.
When It Works
It draws swell from northeast through east-southeast to south (NE-ESE-S), with southeast the best match, and it takes shape in just about any easterly. The break is consistent and works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft. When the lake entrance is flowing, it can help groom the bars.
Wind and Tide
Look for west offshore wind. It can break across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This one suits intermediate surfers, and you can expect a moderately busy lineup when it's on. There may be a touch of local sentiment, though you're more likely to be welcomed as an extra pair of legs in the water. Worth knowing that the wider stretch up toward Port feels lonely and a little sharky.
