Overview
Las Gaviotas is a long right-hand rivermouth wave, sitting opposite Club Las Gaviotas. The river pushes sand along the bank, which gives the wave its length but also breaks it into sections rather than one clean wall. It breaks over a mix of boulders and sand. If you have time to look around, the Finca de los Rivera area holds further right points and plenty of room for exploring.
When It Works
The wave draws swell from north through northeast, with northeast swell the best match. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, so there is a decent window of sizes to catch it in. Consistency is moderate, meaning you will not score it every visit, but the good windows are worth waiting for.
Wind and Tide
Look for southeast offshore wind to clean up the faces. The rivermouth can work through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This one suits intermediate surfers, mostly because of the sectiony nature of the wave and the need to read where the sand is doing its work. The lineup tends to stay fairly quiet.
