Las Machas surf guide

Las Machas is a long beach that starts in Chile and stretches down to Peru. It's often seen as a good spot for beginners and less experienced surfers, but during the winter months, when the swells get big, it can also be a decent place to chill out after riding some more challenging waves at nearby spots like Arica. The wind patterns here are pretty predictable—mornings are usually calm, but by midday or around 1 PM, the wind kicks up, which can mess with the better waves at Gringo and Buey. Unlike those more intense spots, Las Machas offers a more relaxed atmosphere with softer, mushy waves, making it a friendly beachbreak where you can just kick back and enjoy the water.

The surf at Las Machas can handle swells from the South-Southwest to the West-Northwest, with sizes typically between 3 to 4 feet (about 1 to 1.2 meters). This beachbreak produces both lefts and rights, so there are plenty of options for everyone. The bottom is sandy, which can be a plus for beginners since it’s generally easier on falls. The waves are usually pretty forgiving, especially during the low tide, making it a good spot for intermediate surfers too. While it can get crowded at times, the vibe tends to be mellow, and you might have to watch out for some local kids and bodyboarders dropping in.

Access to Las Machas is simple—just park right in front of the beach. If you're looking to avoid crowds, you might want to wander a mile or two up north for more wave action with fewer surfers around. As far as seasons go, it’s best from May to July, so plan your trip accordingly if you want to catch it at its prime. Don't forget, while you’re enjoying the sun and surf, to keep an eye out for the pier since it can be a hazard if you’re not paying attention.

Wind certainty

Wind certainty tells you how much the weather models agree on the forecast.

  • High certainty: Models agree closely; forecast is reliable.
  • Medium certainty: Some disagreement; conditions may shift slightly.
  • Low certainty: Models diverge; treat forecast with caution.

We calculate this by comparing wind speed, gust and direction from multiple models (like GFS, ECMWF, Arome, and Harmonie) and seeing how closely they match. They are weighted, meaning that some models count more than others, depending on how good they are for a certain spot.

Forecast Cheat Sheet

Short on time? Focus on wave energy. It’s the best single metric to gauge how big and powerful the waves will be.

Click any table cell to jump to that forecast hour. The map will update with forecast arrows, so you can see if wind and swell direction are lining up.

Use the table sidebar to switch units for height and speed.

Log your surf sessions to compare forecasts with real sessions and sharpen future predictions.

On the map, click a metric label to bring that arrow to the front — handy when arrows overlap.

Models and Updates

Surfnerd blends multiple global and local wind and swell models using advanced interpolation and spatial techniques to create an "ensemble" forecast. Forecasts are refreshed hourly.

Surf Predictions

Our AI-driven algorithm scores surf quality, shown by green, orange, and gray dots. Each forecast hour is rated for wind, swell, and tide quality, then combined into an overall score. Here’s the scale:

Perfect
Good
Average
Bad or No Data

Session logs also feed the algorithm — the more you log, the smarter your forecasts get.
