Le Borgne surf guide

Le Borgne is a surf spot located close to Pointe Boeuf that features a right reefbreak/rivermouth setup. It's known for its long, peeling rides, especially when you get the right conditions. The place offers some East wind protection, making it a decent spot when the wind is acting up. The surf has a mix of tapering rights, and if you're lucky, you might catch some short, playful lefts in the diesel blue water. There’s also a shallow left on the east side of town that can be tackled on a big NE swell, but most of the time, it's not the easiest to ride.

The surf at Le Borgne works best with a NorthEast swell direction, handling swell sizes down to about 1ft (0.3 meters). The waves break over an uneven reef, and you’re primarily looking at right-handers. The preferred wind direction is from the SouthWest, and you'll find the best conditions during low, mid, and high tides. This spot is suitable for intermediate surfers, so if you're still learning, make sure you're comfortable out there.

Getting to Le Borgne is pretty straightforward. You can paddle across the rivermouth from town, or if you're not into that, there’s a short ferryboat you can catch. The area has some cool old colonial architecture, with a few hotels like La Perle to check out. The local vibe is friendly, and the dialect has a unique Cuban twist to it. If you're planning to explore other spots, you can head west, but be cautious with the mountain pass during the rainy season since it can get pretty tricky.

Forecast Cheat Sheet

Short on time? Focus on wave energy. It’s the best single metric to gauge how big and powerful the waves will be.

Click any table cell to jump to that forecast hour. The map will update with forecast arrows, so you can see if wind and swell direction are lining up.

Use the table sidebar to switch units for height and speed.

Log your surf sessions to compare forecasts with real sessions and sharpen future predictions.

On the map, click a metric label to bring that arrow to the front — handy when arrows overlap.

Models and Updates

Surfnerd blends multiple global and local wind and swell models using advanced interpolation and spatial techniques to create an "ensemble" forecast. Forecasts are refreshed hourly.

Surf Predictions

Our AI-driven algorithm scores surf quality, shown by green, orange, and gray dots. Each forecast hour is rated for wind, swell, and tide quality, then combined into an overall score. Here’s the scale:

Perfect
Good
Average
Bad or No Data

Session logs also feed the algorithm — the more you log, the smarter your forecasts get.

Wind certainty

Wind certainty tells you how much the weather models agree on the forecast.

  • High certainty: Models agree closely; forecast is reliable.
  • Medium certainty: Some disagreement; conditions may shift slightly.
  • Low certainty: Models diverge; treat forecast with caution.

We calculate this by comparing wind speed, gust and direction from multiple models (like GFS, ECMWF, Arome, and Harmonie) and seeing how closely they match. They are weighted, meaning that some models count more than others, depending on how good they are for a certain spot.
