Overview
Llantwit Major is a large, triangular reef where the wave changes character as the tide moves. It's a right-hander that breaks over a mix of uneven reef and sand, so the shape shifts depending on how much water is covering the ledge.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from southwest through west, with southwest swell the best match. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3 m / 10 ft. At low tide you can find long, walling rights, and as the tide pushes up over the ledge the wave breaks into split peaks.
Wind and Tide
Look for northeast offshore wind. It breaks at low and mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
There are locals in the lineup to be aware of. Keep an eye out for rocks and rips while you're out there.
