Lobitos surf guide

Lobitos is one of the standout surf spots in Northern Peru, known for its mix of fun waves and occasional barrels. The town has more than five different surf breaks all within walking distance, making it a versatile spot for surfers of various skill levels. The main attraction, Lobitos Point, is a left point break that offers a blend of open faces for maneuvering and sections where you can get barreled. The bottom is mostly sand with some rocky areas, especially in the La Frontera section.

The best conditions for Lobitos happen with a NorthWest swell, but it also picks up South and even some rare West swells that can create hollow barrels. The waves typically range from 5 to 7 feet (about 1.5 to 2 meters), but the spot can handle bigger surf as well. For the smoothest rides, aim for low to mid-tide when the wave is more consistent. Morning winds are usually light and offshore, turning into sideshore by the afternoon and then swinging back to offshore before sunset. This makes for ideal surfing conditions, especially in the fall and winter months.

Getting to Lobitos is straightforward, whether you take a taxi, hop on the local vans, or arrange a pick-up with a local surf house. The vibe is pretty mellow, with light crowds, so it's a good spot to enjoy some waves without feeling too crowded. Just remember to watch out for a few rocks in the water, and you’ll be all set for a great surf session.
