Overview
Lobitos is one of the best left-hand points in northern Peru, breaking over uneven reef and sand. When the sand fills the gaps, it throws out long, peeling walls along with barrel sections and open faces built for high-performance surfing.
When It Works
The point draws swell from south through west-southwest to northwest (S-WSW-NW), with northwest (NW) the best match. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 2.1 m / 7 ft and can handle bigger surf when it comes. This is a consistent left that comes into its own through autumn and winter.
Wind and Tide
Look for southeast (SE) offshore wind. The point breaks across most of the tide, from low through high, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
Lobitos is approachable enough for beginners while still rewarding stronger surfers, and it suits a wide spread of equipment, from shortboards and fish to longboards, bodyboards, and more. The lineup tends to stay quiet and can feel a little reserved.
Access
Getting there is easy: grab a taxi, hop on the local Lobitos vans, or arrange a pickup. Expect long paddles back up the point, and keep an eye out for a few rocks. There's also a history of armed robbery on surfers travelling to the waves from Talara, so take care on the way in.
